This is an immense effort, and without the dedication of Adolf Hoel and his kind, it is in no way certain that Svalbard would have come under Norwegian sovereignty. And a Norway without Svalbard would, to a large degree, have been a polar nation of the past and not of the present.
The year of 2011 was the so-called Nansen-Amundsen year in Norway. A rather constructed coincidence of 150 years since Nansen’s birth and Amundsen’s 100th year anniversary for reaching the south pole.
I was invited to write an article for the journal Fram Forum as a contrast to the current extreme focus on the «established» polar heroes of Amundsen and Nansen. This journal is published by the Norwegian polar powerhouse of the Fram Centre in Tromsø, which includes the Norwegian Polar Institute.
The whole issue of the journal can be read here.
